A supervisor is a first line management personnel, involved in administrative tasks. There has to be some element of planning, organising, coordinating, monitoring, evaluating functions etc. Though some technical skills may be required and used daily, it cannot be the predominant nature of work. If the person is involved in technical work, in the eyes of law he is a 'workman' and not a supervisor. In that case the employee is entitled to compensation on termination of service.

Legally speaking as per the ID Act,1947, if any supervisor gets a monthly salary of above Rs.15000=, he is not a workman.
In that case termination of his services at the instance of the employer and the compensation, if any payable would be strictly as per the exit clause of the contract of employment .
In case, if he falls within the ambit of the definition of workman u/s 2(s) of the IDAct, his such termination would fall under retrenchment and he would be entitled to notice and compensation as per Sec.25-F of the IDA subject to the other conditions precedent to retrenchment.
