Dear Kumud,
Good to note that you would like to train your managers. The benefit of training managers is that the knowledge and skills that they gain does not remain with them but it percolates down to the subordinates. Many times their subordinates just imitate their managers and master the skills (though they may not understand the theoretical part that lies behind the skills).
The top-most skills for managers is Motivational Skills. Managers need to get the work done from their subordinates. But then many managers just pass on the instruction that they get from their seniors. Other managers just load their subordinates with the responsibility.
Managers come under the stress. Many times they receive wrath from their superiors or customers. Out of frustration, they download their anger to the subordinates. While subordinate may not retaliate but he/she mentally puts off himself or herself. If the subordinates are demotivated then they never come up with the ideas for process improvement. Thus organisation pays the price because of the managers.
Sometimes managers lack interpersonal skills or their nature is abrasive. Such managers domineer on their subordinates unjustly. This degrades the interpersonal environment of the company. Can you expect subordinates to give their best in such situation? Recently there was a post on this forum of similar kind for which I have given reply. Click the following link to refer my reply:

I have been conducting training for more than a decade. Considering the requirements of the clients and that too irrespective of the industry, I have designed 2-day training programme on "Leadership and Motivation". You may click the following link to refer details of that programme:

Dear Kumud,
You need to do a Training Needs Analysis to find out the gap in the competencies of the managers and see what skills needs focus.
Here are the common techniques for training needs identification
Observation (Direct & Indirect)
Questionnaires
Interviews (Management/Individual)
Complaints
Customer VOC (Internal/External)
Performance metrics, Data Points (Service Level Agreements)
Psychometric Tests
Competency Based Approach
The managers might need training for the following skills:
Communication Skills (written and Verbal)
Coaching Skills
Motivating Employees
Delegation Skills
Emotional Intelligence
Problem Solving
Leadership Skills
The duration and frequency can be decided once you go through the TNI data and analyse it. It is very situational and depends upon lot of factors like present skill gap of the employees, urgency of the situation, department goals and others.
You may send me a test mail (atul@oasisoflearning.com) to gain more information regarding the procedures for conducting Training Needs Analysis. Thank you!

Hi everyone,
I know this thread is almost a year old - but I came across it and I want to revive this discussion. As someone who is a manager myself, in the training department AND a psychology student. I truly believe that with soft skills pertaining to EI (Emotional intelligence) and Empathy and the intrinsic motivation are key in building any leader. Being able to identify the key traits and personalities of your team enable and empower you to be able to manage them differently and adapt yourself to their working ways. Thereby creating an environment which is happier, healthier and more productive.
If your employees are happier with you, they will work harder and respect you more.
