I am handling HR department in small scale industry. There is no specific format for HR policies, only recruitment etc. done by HR only. But now I would like to propose new suggestions like increase annual leaves, 5 weekday working etc. How I approach my management for that?

Dear Jyoti,
While bringing change, it is important to go step by step. Therefore, propose one thing at a time. At this you need to give priority to legal compliance. Therefore, please check whether you fulfil provisions of Factories Act or Shops and Establishment Act of your state, as applicable. Your leave policy and policy on working hours etc should be derived from either act.
As far as conversion of 6-day week to 5-day week is concerned, you need to show to the management, how productivity will improve by this change. Therefore, please do Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) of this subject. However, as of now, you may defer this proposal.
Thanks,

Dear Jyoti,
I simply want to know what prompted you to adopt 5 days working for your establishment. I do not think that in simple manner you would like to bring change. Whenever one wants to bring change it simply does not happenn. Which needs subjective study on the aspect as well as oprtunities and threats expect. Is this your personal views or management or employees. Wherever 5 days working procedure is being followed have adopted longer period of working which falls under OT rules.
You have to analyse the social, economical & legal complications that may arise out of the change. You need to check the pulse of the management along with the employees working in your establishment. Many things look beautiful from distance but ugliness is spoted when one goes closer.
What would be your stand, if such a situation arises(certain) saturday-sunday is Weekly off, Monday- NH and Tues day: FH and wednesday is given a bundh called by the ruling party of the state? Whether your industry is on contineous process? This is all the highlights and to be keep in mind. Always count as many negetives impacts you expects and find its solution can help you to plan your proposal for a better result.

Dear Jyoti madam.
Before even thinking of change in employee service conditions of peripheral nature like 5day week working or increase in leave, you need to make thorough homework/ground work on core aspects of business.
Firstly, understand thoughrly the vital aspects of your business processes, from product manufacturing to reaching the customer, cost of doing it and profitability and deliverables to customer.
Understand the competition, the service conditions of employees, performance standards and total picture of what gives competitive advantage/edge.
Based on the total picture, pick the most important area of change ie, remuneration, productivity improvement related incentives , leaves, fringe benefits.etc.
Remember , no management will support any improvement in the employment conditions, barring statutory required, which are not likely to improve work efficiency, productivity or any other advantage immediately or in the long run. It is sheer a matter of give and take.
