Why employee engagement activity are essential in any company. Is refreshment and extra work load on an employee are counted under those activity?

Employee engagement shall not be equated to a bait in the form of refreshment to an employee to make him shoulder him extra work load. Paying OT or offering tea and samosa in return for sitting late for work are not employee engagement activities though the employees feel satisfied with what they are getting for sitting late. A satisfied employee need not be an engaged employee If an employee feels emotionally connected with his job and owns it, he can be said to be an engaged employee.

Though at the risk of repletion, I again would like to narrate a small story to illustrate the point. A man, while on his way to the office, found two persons at a construction site, breaking large stones into

small bits.he stopped and asked one of them 'what are you doing here?'. He replied that Iam breaking this large stone into small bits so that it can be used for laying foundation. He repeated the same question to the other person who replied " I am constructing a Church and therefore Iam breaking this large stone into small bits for laying foundation for it.".That is the difference between the engaged employee and normal one.

Hi Manish,

Greetings .....

Our Good & Learned Friend Mr. B.Saikumar has just hit the nail on the head with that one-liner .... "I am constructing a Church and therefore I am breaking this large stone into small bits for laying foundation for it." This is exactly how one brings out his best for causes of the Company and gets blended into the "Organisational Identity". This is absolutely a different concept and stands miles apart from offering "light refreshment" for putting in extra hours of work. I may sound rude, but it too is seen at workplaces that workers/staff accumulate this "refreshment cost" to buy groceries for use at home. What I mean to say with it is "people at times consider this "refreshment" as part of their Salary/Wages" that falls miles apart from the concept of "Employee Engagement".

Employee Engagement is about creating conditions and environment in which employees offer their capacity and potential and be called as faces of the Organisation. This never happens without complete belief in Organisational procedures and target achievements for a total upliftment. Thus, it is said that Emotional Attachment with the Organisation is Engagement.

Hi, Soumitra
You have said what I missed in my post. Yes, many employees treat O.T as an additional income to them and get enraged but not engaged if there is no O.T in any month. Well said.
