Hi All,
I have 8 years of experience in Human Resources and am presently working as a HR Manager and managing around 200 employees. I have recently got an offer as Deputy Manager - HR in an organisation of around 1500 employees. I am not sure if this shift in designation from HR Manager to Deputy Manager - HR will add value to my profile or if this is a plain simple demotion. Also please note that the change in CTC is also not more than 5%.
Kindly advice me if I should take up this offer as a Deputy Manager- HR.

Dear Ajit,

The answer lies in your post itself. The demotion will come with increase in CTC by 5% Anyway, the pros and cons of joining new company would be as below:

a) If you join, the new CTC will be more by 5% which is stated earlier.

b) On the negative side, the company is too big. They will have lot of HR professionals and HR department will have lot of sections. You would be allotted one of the sections. As of now you are handling full-fledged HR department. Therefore, please take into account diminutiveness of your future role.

c) If you join the new company, you will have to strive to regain your present designation i.e. HR Manager. Therefore, post of DGM (HR) or AGM (HR) will elude you further.

d) If you join new company, you would be reporting to GM (HR). Worst still, you might have to report to the HR Manager in near or distant future. Will you be able to mentally reconcile to this reporting authority?

e) Suppose if you report to AGM (HR) or DGM (HR) in the new company, there is every possibility of you getting feeling that "I know better that _____". Once this bug starts biting you, it could hit your motivation level. Please note, I am enumerating just of the possibilities.

f) Your total experience is of eight years. But how many years completed after becoming HR Manager? When you complete 4-5 years, yours would be fit case to become GM (HR). Please note, designation means lot in Indian job market.

Hope the above analysis is sufficient.

Thanks,

Dinesh Divekar
