Happiness is a state of mind and thus is very subjective. What makes me happy, may not appeal to others. For example one can be happy to work with new challenges and others may resent it.Therefore it is better to conduct a survey among your employees which is likely to generate more ideas that may work well. Hope this helps.

Dear Gaurav,

The major challenge for business owners is how to fulfil self-actualisation need to employees. This need comes at the top of Abraham Maslow's Theory of Hierarchy of Needs.

Employee engagement is a sign of fulfilment of this need. Secondly, to fulfil this need, you may not have to spend excessive funds. For example, you may send employee to attend some international seminar. He could be obliged to you for doing this yet the seminar may not fulfil his self-actualisation need. Some time a challenging job may fulfil this need therefore, look at how to create intellectually stimulating environment.

Maintaining work-life balance is another way to engage employee. Therefore, first calculate what is the ratio of official Vs actual hours spent at work place. Try finding out means of increasing this ratio.

Ok...

The purpose behind my suggestion is to just feel the pulse of the employees so that whatever you would like to provide to make the employees happy will come close to their expectations in general. Any how, you can think of various low cost employee engagement initiatives as Job zone suggested. In addition, you can conduct a quiz on product information, if you are are retailer and award a prize either in cash or in kind to the winners. This will generate interest in the employee s to learn more about their products to be ready for the next programme.

Making Employees happy is really not as daunting as it seems! Little things may help in creating or generating more positivity within the organisation.
Small things like sending birthday wishes to employees, congratulating them on their joining dates for no. of years of service, wedding anniversary, child birth are all small, buit valuable gestures which makes employees feel one with the organsiation.
More so to say, work culture which promotes mutual respect, trust and alows them to celebrate small things are great. This may include festivals of multi culture, acknowledgment of small achievements and motivating them to come forward with suggestions for organsiational betterment are also really enriching.
The only thing to be kept in mind is that as long as there are no barriers owing to heirarchy, religion or any other discrimaition, and all are treated in a fair and equal manner, these above small steps will come a long way!
Happy workplace!
