Business Development is a sales activity that is expected to deliver results in the long term, for example developing a channel or partner strategy. Marketing is a function which supports both sales and business development allowing them to target specific market channels,customers , price and position the products.
Role and Responsibility differ depending on the Company, However in many companies sales is misunderstood for Business development

Dear Vicky,
Marketing is a planning & responding to customer needs. Marketing is a human activity directed as satisfy needs & wants through an exchange process.Other hand Business is to only sale purpose one service and product.Main thing to increase sale & profit in business.Marketing is to know needs ,ideas,demerits about a specific product & services.

Marketing is lead generation, and creating awareness of the company and product in the market.
Sales is simply the process of converting leads into customers and retaining those customers for future ;
Business Development is looking beyond your current target market and sales channels to develop new market, new partners and new channels that inherently take longer to bring into the mainstream.

Dear Vicky,
Hema's responses are spot on!
Consider this example to highlight what she's already explained very well:
When Apple engaged Reddington and Ingram to sell iphones directly to consumers using their existing channels, market penetration etc, that was Business Development.
When Reddington and Microingram offered iphones on EMIs, cashback offers, and smartphone exchange programs, that is Marketing.
So, Business Development is an activity that needs to happen BEFORE marketing will ever be effective.
And, similarly, for marketing to be effective, there needs to be a sound Business Development strategy and plan that underpins it.
Makes sense?
Take care & have fun!
