Dear Kumar,
I had no accurate answer for your query so I requested a person who a researcher in his area. I have copy pasted the replied mail to you and you may refer the same.......
"My name is ........... and I am the coordinator for the Occupational and Environmental health network of India (OEHNI). Your query has been forwarded to me by Laurie.
In India, there has been a ban on mining of all forms of Asbestos. Despite the ban, there are 2 mines in Andhra Pradesh which continue production of asbestos fibres.
Use of Asbestos and Asbestos products is not banned in India. India imports a large quantity of fibres from countries like Canada, Russia, zimbabwe etc.
In case you have any more questions, please feel free to write.

Well, there is a ban for producing/mining the one. But there is no law in India which has been formed which prevents using the one. Infact India imports from different countries, though in other countries using it is strictly banned/prohibited by law.,
Hence, Legally speaking, there is no law supporting against the use of asbestos, but most of the industries have already taken the step to avoid using the same, if your company is not bothered about the health of employees and people around, it may continue its usage.......

Dear All,
Recently I joined a workshop of DGFASLI on 11/02/13, in which a speaker stated that use of asbestos is still on in India but the minings are banned.

Yes, use and production of asbestos is not banned in India. despite its perilous health implication asbestos is thriving. My question is why it is still allowed in India notwithstanding its ill effects to health

I work with an International agricultural research organisation in Hyderabad and we are looking to replace our 40 year old corrugated asbestos roofing sheets over buildings and sheds in a phased manner in 5-6 years time considering the costs. I am looking for a company/ organisation with OSHA, EPA or Indian accreditation (MoEF) to undertake safe removal & disposal of the old asbestos sheets.
Thanks.
Suresh
