Absolutely!!
Play, gamification, fun... all contribute to more motivation, more commitment, more engagement, etc... ultimately a win-win for both the employees and the organization. Organizations implementing this are starting to reap the benefits big time!

Stick can only be used to get repetitive, unoriginal work and there too, it is a rather ineffective ploy.
You can't get creative, original work from intelligent workers in knowledge industry by treating them as prisoners in a military camp.
Intelligent workers need to be given the kind of environment which gives them the space to think and a stress free environment - so that they focus on the areas where their energies are best spent.
That's why the stress on playfulness - you don't want your best brains to be occupied with unnecessary bureaucracy or avoidable stress.
