Dear Keith,
How many days passed since the employee has absconded?
If employee absconds with company property then you should lodge police complaint. Give the police information about employee like date of joining, designation, his photo etc. Give the details of laptop also. Sending letter to his residence will not suffice purpose.

Thanks for your mail and suggestions.
@ Kumar : The assest was tagged to employee; without an acknowledgment the laptop wouldn't have been handeover to him. i shall check with the Procurement\assest team about this and thanks for the template but does not help for this case i can use it for unauthorized absence case.
@ DVD : He was actually missing from work since Jan 2012, i sent him registered letters about his unauthorized absence and also had set up an enquiry which he never turned up and we had to conclude with ex-parte proceedings and separated the employee.
During his settlements clearance ( in May 2012) it was brought to our light about the missing laptop and i sent a quite lot of reminders to his personal ID and there is no response; need to know send an registered letter to handover the laptop and take it up legally or lodge an FIR finally.

Without condoning your acts you are hereby offered a final opportunity to handover the laptop by 10 July 2012 at your location () failing which this is without prejudice to the right of the management to take appropriate legal action against you.

Well the phrase "Without condoning your acts" is hardly an incentive for anybody to come back and hand over the laptop. This might make the remote chance of a seemingly unlikely return simply impossible.
Whilst it is important to report the theft of the laptop, I sincerely hope you are not banking on the Police to put a trace on your laptop. Not to damnify the valuable services of the police force, it is a matter of them choosing their priorities.
A FIR in his local police station, I dare say, could pose an impediment for any police clearance he may want to seek for purposes of Passport etc.

You cannot tell anyone to upload names of accused on any website. As far as Indian laws are concerned, nobody is guilty till it is proved. It is court's job to prove the accused is guilty or not. Therefore, it is better if you don't jump the guns.
The website in question is third party and from the legal standpoint it has no locus standi. This is a matter between employer and employee and no third party has any business to poke their nose. If they do that on one fine day, it get bloodied too.
Who knows the truth? I agree that employee has absconded. But then that is the only truth. But then someone else might have lost or stolen the laptop and absence of absconding employee might have come handy to pass on the default to him. It took them months to discover that the employee had laptop, this speaks in itself about the internal culture of the company.

I am afraid, winnerhr is only suggesting uploading names on restrictedcandidates.com. He is farthest from alluding that such an upload will result in the pronouncement of the accused to be guilty.
Well the website isn't a decree but represents a voice. There are blogs by employees that damn companies. So that evens out.
