I have just joined a new company and am the only HR here. I am asked to prepare the job description of all the staff working here... can any one help me with how to prepare? where to start? any formats for that?

Hi, Categorise designations according to departments,Consult department heads about the work allocations. With refrence to the dsignation scrub out their specific job description.

here there is no dept. heads... and am going to do this for the existing staff... so without the dept heads...i dont have any source of asking them... i can only ask the concern person directly...in that case what should i do...?

It seems your firm has not categorized different departments. in this case I would suggest you to have a closer look at the working of the personnel. on that basis differentiate them in categories. suppose few of them are looking after despatch and procurement, then categorize that group as one.
on second hand provide some basic details of your firm to have basic idea about your firm.
