Dear Sir,
My boss did something extraordinarily bad.. he slapped one of the employees for one of the minor mistakes done by him.. It was later discovered that the employee was not exactly at fault.. Please suggest if we can take any action against the boss... Its getting difficult working in this environment...

My suggestion is that don't take action.
Ask him when he is free. Then go and speak to him about this and make sure that he should not get anger again.
Inform him that the mistake of him. Call the employee and speak to him in front of you that the mistake is not by him.
Make him to understood his mistake. Don't try to do that infront of the employee. Allow some time to realize his mistake. Again go and speak to him and call the employee to make your boss to apolize to him. Try this idea only once. if not, then we need find the other alternatives

Your boss has done a mistake of slapping an employee for nothing of his mistake, over and above he unethically fired the employee. Pl. think whether to continue with such an unethical person, why because a HOD should not be emotional and if in a different scenario he is so he should reliaze his mistake and beg for a pardon but instead of that he fired the employee.
There is every possibility of repition of such mistakes. If your senior management is really interested to correct the mistake then they have to initiate action otherwise it will be difficult for you to initiate action on your boss. Try outside and better to move.

You should take immediate action against the boss. He should be fired without delay. Postponing action would set a bad precedent.

Hi Friends,
Got to see this thread now itself!
Actually, a boss should be an idealistic person, where his subordinates would learn things from him.
This kind of attitude will definetly ruin our career whether we are employee / boss.
So, lets learn a lesson from this situation and lets not develop such kind of attitude. As we are human beings, we commit mistakes. In this scenarios, aggressive decisions would be costly.
The best method to get the works done in an organisation is a kind of good communication, Organisational Behavior and patience.
Think in this way too..! to acheive success. Trust me it will help you out.

Dear Monica,

Tell your boss that violence begets violence. Imagine the victim remains cool outwardly but thinks of taking revenge.

I know a case wherein, 3-4 employees got together and they had beaten their G.M. black and blue. For a long time he could not attend his office.

Those who take revenge, they find innovative ways to do that. Breaking a knee cap is a worst thing. Breaking both the knee caps is far worse. I know a latter case wherein the person lost his job forever.

Revenge apart, violence from employers vitiate organisation's culture. It creates a dent in the brand image. Who would like to work in such unprofessional company? The news must have spread like a wild fire in the job market. Will he be able to attract good talent now?

In one of the hotels of Bangalore, owner had slapped his G.M. in the lobby. This news spread like a wild fire. Later he paid a hefty price for his mistake, as he could never get good manpower because everybody avoided joining this hotel. Finally he had to outsource his business to some another party.

If your employer has some sense, he should call everybody and apologise the victim in front of everybody, else let him be prepared for a slap from his destiny.

Ok...

Employees mistakes are reviewed seriously but EMPLOYERS/OWNERS/DIRECTORS are NOT. At times non-guilty employees are FIRED even if they were not involved. EMPLOYERS/OWNERS/DIRECTORS can do anything but EMPLOYEES CANNOT.
He should realize and accept his mistake whatsoever & whomsoever he may be. If you ignore him, he will repeat the same. You employees have right to make him feel that he has done a MISTAKE so that he doesn't repeat the same in future. For few bucks how can employees lose their DIGNITY/IMAGE/REPUTATION/HONESTY/SINCERITY/LOYALTY or TOLERATE NONSENSE?
With profound regards

Slapping an employee is assault. The victim should report the matter to the higher authorities in organization and also the police. The police should investigate and take appropriate action.
