it can be either an addition of responsibilities or getting in to the next hierarchical cadre or even moving to a similar vertical which demands the same amount of work!!

In large organisations, the department will be having many break ups. Like HR Department, having Leave, Promotion, Personal Documentation, Discipline, Welfare, like that so many branches will be there. Normally Mr. A will be deployed as main for Leave and Mr. B will be in training, Mr. B will be main for Promotion and Mr.C will be in training, Mr. C will be Main in Personal Documentation and Mr.D will be in training, Mr.D will be main in Discipline and Mr. E will be under training, Mr. E will be main in Welfare and Mr. A will be under training, for first three months and it will be rotated branchwise, so that if a person left the organisation or on long leave, the regular work will not get hampered. That's the purpose of job rotation, which is not at having any relation with cadre or promotion. Here all the employees can learn all the job in the department.

The advantages of this system is that no work will be hampered due to non availability of manpower. The bore feeling will not be there to any employees because of repetition of work. This will lead that the employees also will be deployed independantly in any new offices to have control over the entire department. The Idle manpower can be utilised properly and wherever the workload is more the extra manpower deploying will not be much problem as the entire team has been trained in the same way by further rotating them on monthly basis or quarterly basis.

Dear Rajam,
Bhaskar has given you a good explanation. More information can be found at <link no longer exists - removed> This was found by Google search at Google
It will also be useful for us to give you apt examples, if you give the scenario: what you do and in which type of industry.
Have a nice day.

Hi Rajamsu,
It totally depends upon background, qualifications and experience...
Generally we decide upon the job rotation where excess of manpower can be utilized in the areas where there is a lack of workforce....as explained by our fellow member
S Bhaskar.
In BPOs and call centers, IJPs (Internal job posting) are announced and opportunities are given to associates or callers to apply for other functional roles, they are given some training and then placed on the job..which generally is a kind of promotion for them..

GOT THE THINGS..
"Both job rotation and promotion are tasks undertaken by human resource
department of a company. But these techniques are different from each other because
“rotation refers to any change in assignment, usually indicated by a change in title or
department, that does not involve a change in compensation level,” while promotion does
not necessarily need any replacement in job position (Campion, Cheraskin, & Michael,
1994, 1518)."
THANK U MR.NASH.....

I hope you found the answer to your following question. Could you also kindly answer your other question about who will do manager's job in his absence?
Now, I am sure you and others will understand why I do not directly give answers to questions, but make people read for themselves and come up with an answer.
Have a nice day.
