we are from manufacturing setup. We are little bit confused about assigning employee Id or employee codes for all departments. Can any 1 give samples for the employee codes or employee ID no for the manufacturing setup. I need it urgently since we are arranging for the employee Id cards. Pls. do help me in this regard.
We have the following departments:
Accounts
Administration
Production
Purchase
Maintenance
Marketing
Eletrical
HR
Despatch
General
etc

oh God what a silly question dear u arrange as per your preference . first assign dept code like for HR dept the employee code will hr0001,hr002 etc. like that for purchase pur001,pur002 etc. the codes have to contain character & numeric both , hope it will help you

1)you can take a range of nos. from 100 & allocate the same to your employees based on their Date of joining.
2) You can allocate the respective depts with some alphabets/nos. like HR-B/9****
3) You can allocate codes to the differnt grades followed by the no. of the employee.
Eg: Trainnee - TR***, Executive- Ex***, Manager - M****

Hi Duke, If I allocate Trainee, Executive or Manager diffenentlt, what shlould i do if those employee get promotion frequently? Is it appropriate to re-allocate codes? Kindly suggest.

Year of Appointment
First Letter of the Department,
First Letter of the Employee Name
Serial No. of Job Enrollment as per HR Records..
For Example: If Mr. Arun was recruited for Production depart. in 2009 as 5th person for that department then the code will be APR09005 (A - PR - 09 - 005)... (Addition of the Zero in the last 3 digits are depends on your company size...

You can give Employee id as per their joining date starting from 0001 or 1000. It should be a four or five digit series so that you have some commonality and should your company want to go in for any kind of automation in due course there is no issue with that also. Foe codes to different departments give them two digit code such as 10, 11, 12 starting from service departments such as Accounts etc and move on to Production. There is nothing hard and fast about it, can follow any sequence till you keep one type of deptts together for ease of remembering subsequently.

What pradeepullanat had mentioned is fine. Again there is no much methodology in preparing Emp. Code. Normally it starts with the company name's diphthongs or the departmental abbreviations. Then the no would start from 0001, 1000, 10000, 10001, etc..
Its a simplex one not a complex one...

I think to mainatain uniformity, my company makes the arrangement in such a way that employees are giving codes as regards their date of entry which also effects in the payroll. Though the Human Manager Software usually generates the code as programmed.
My company is called Consolidated Breweries ( Subs. of Heineken International) we have the code thus irrespective of the department.
CB0001,CB0010,CB01053 e.t.c ( Note: the CB represents Consolidated Breweries)
