Hey Priya,
Your subject was so funny..."desi HR". I looked into your message just because of that. Kidding.
It depends on what you wish to accomplish in life actually. "Position in an organisation" is less important than responsibility, decision power, and value one adds to a company. In long run what you have learned and can accomplish and do matters for any orgainisation and also for your institution. I will never join a organsation who give me a position of CEO and ask me to work as a peon. Will you??
My suggestion for the current situation is, accept the HR manager post and add value to your organisation and make it happen like the ones of Reliance and TATA. All the best.

hi priya
even i've felt the same thing. but my experience is somewat different. Earlier i'd joined the so called big organisation but i was used to get signatures on various papers. even there i was not learning much. Now due to some reasons i've joined this small company but it's been giving me the time to learn new things that how things can be managed in limited resources. Here no one is bitching around. They are concerned bout his/her work and moreover they are more than helpful becz there is no fear that one will get more or less.
In short m enjoying and learning also, which was not possible there becz of work pressure and time limits. M planing to spend quite some time here , to become fully efficient and then i'll search for bigger organisation. I can say i m in ma training period and getting myself ready for further challenges.
i hope this 'd be of some use for you. wish you gd lk.

Big or small is a mind set and more over the need of the hour..dont just take it as granted as big organisation has grate hr practices and small dont have or vice versa.
it all depends on the view point of the board wheather to rank HR as a supoort and facilitator or a department who is also responsible for mentoring and overall developement of employee.
my suggestion woud be please dont be biased on designation or size of the company ...it's the versatile exposure not only in HR but also to financial ,Branding, strategy that matters a lot in the long run .......

Dear Priya,
I believe you should make use of the opportunity of being a Manager - HR. Becuase along with the promotion I am sure you would also have a few decision making authority in the kit. Once you have experience in being an HR Manager (by this I mean managing HR for a the enitire unit) for a small unit - probably after a couple of years you may want to explore opportunities with MNCs who have their business units at different locations, and you may be given an opportunity to be in-charge of that one small unmit - but in a big organization. Slowly you will have the opportunity to manage two-to-three units at a time. Make use of this.
In a huge organizations systems may be followed, and also your role will be very confined to a specific activity..even if you have knowledge on some areas, people may not seek your suggestions just because you will be caught in a hierarchy trap here.

Dear Priya,
Please try to analyse the following points within your self. what is a big organization according to you? The one with more turn over? The one with thousands of people and many locations? The one with very big brand names? It depends, A garment manufacturing company will be having thousands of people but still will not be half of the IT or service companies revenuewise.
Many of the well known big brands have negilgible amount of people. Every organization can not be a Reliance or TATA.
Irrespective of the revenue and the number of people the basic role of HR remains same, whether it is 20 people organization or 20000 people organization. The only factor is, to handle more people you require more people and the role of HR professional gets sliced and distributed.
Also exposures may vary and we must decide what kind of exposure we want to have. Is it the IR orientation? IS it the corporate orientation? is it the plant HR managment?. It is a misconcept that only corporate or big organization exposures give you an advantage.
Scopes are there careerwise with varied experiences. So kindly decide what you want first then the choice will be clear.

Hi priya,
According to me, small organisations offer you more challenging jobs. what i meant is a job of generalist...wherein you hav the opportunity to explore each aspects of HR. wherein big orgtns normally offer the role of specialist. In your case since you hv already gained an experience of 4years in the small orgtn, i m sure you mite hv learnt a lot... Now, its time to go one step above in your carrier chart...Postion comes with responsibilities, decision making abilities and experience. So,if u r offered a role of HR manager, please grab the opportunity since you will get exposed to more challenging roles. If you see Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs theory, one has to climb up and it will keep you self-motivated and reach the top!!!how long will you work under the same position????

Priyanka.

Dear Priya,
Big Fish in small pond OR small fish in big pond?
To be or not to be?
As suggested by senior colleagues, I would like to be the Big Fish in small pond!
Who knows, the small pond may grow bigger in the years to come?
A word of caution though.. as HR manager you will responsible and accountable for several legal and statutory compliances which may not be in place currently in your organisation. These you will have to introduce all by yourself.
The people management you will learn as it comes, a day at a time.
You may request some senior friends / colleagues to be your mentor so as to guide you in your career.
ALL THE BEST!

According to me,knowledge and exposure will always support you,if you are starting ur carrier, exposure is must as HR plays a vital in an organisation, and suppose in any case if your present mangement chages bcos of any external factor,ur situation become more critical, as u need to cope up with market ,management etc, which will be depending on ur knowledge and expertise.
Secondly if you accept the fact that learning is important, than u need to leave the comfort zone.
