The meaning of industry is wide and does not confine only to factories or mines but it includes any business or trade. It shall include any calling, service, employment or avocation of workmen. Industry is a systematic activity carried on with cooperation between employer and employee for production and distribution of goods and services. Only sovereign functions are exempted from the purview of industry.
As such IT is also an industry within the meaning of ID Act and the workers (though they do not agree that they are workers until a situation comes when they are asked to go without following at least the principles of natural justice) are entitled to retrenchment compensation. They certainly can raise an industrial dispute.
