There cannot be one universal reply to the query on how to handle a union because it is a complex issue affected by various factors like 1) whether it is a manufacturing sector or retail 2) whether the union is aggressive or defensive 3) whether there is single union or multiplicity of unions 4) what is the union affiliation- is it local or national ?5)whether the agitation is about routine issues or raging issues and 6) whether the management is on front foot or back foot on the issues 7) whether the communication channels are open or shut etc.
So you will get those skills while you keep dealing with the unions. The best way to learn about a thing is by doing it.

Dear Friends,
I would like to add some more points to the discussion.
Employer & employees are the partners in business. They are the two wheels of same chariot. Both the wheels should move in unison. If both the wheels are not same in every respect, the business can not run smoothly.
Though you are a representative of employer, you are a bridge between employer & employees.
Employees are represented by their union.
So you should treat the union as your partner in the business. You should encourage it to be friendly with management. You should encourage effective communication between the management & union & employees. You should try to reduce conflicts between employer & employees and increase morale amongst every one. At the same time it is most necessary to be fair & firm on your points.
