Dear New HR

There have been few very good responses to your post with special mention to Mr. Dinesh, Mr. Arun Chitlangia & Mr. Shaik Abdul Khadir.

However, I have a suggestion that u should not isolate the employee. Giving him special attention may not work that well & can drive him nuts thereby pushing him more in his shell. You can organize Personality Development training for a group of employees & can nominate him as well. Where he can get a better perspective of his own behaviour & personal dynamics. There are plenty of such exercises, FIRO - B can be effective in letting this particular employee chalk out his behaviour vis-a-vis the behaviour of others in the group. It will provide you with an option to discuss the pros & cons of each behaviour & you can emphasize on the importance of nurturing social skills, the importance of interpersonal skills, personal branding etc. as suggested by Mr. Dinesh. My suggestion is let him himself be aware of his behavioural shortcoming and abnormalities (comparative analysis) rather than anyone else inculcating the feeling in him.

Afterwards you can proceed with what Mr. Arun has suggested. You need to gain acceptance to build a comfort zone with him. Once he will open up you can go to the root cause of it.

But you should have patience and before approaching him should be clear on the background information as pointed by Mr. Shaik Abdul Khadir.

Best Regards...
