Hi, My company has suddenly announced to return to the office for 3 days a week. They have given the very short notice and are behind our backs to get us to the office. As such I'm not gonna meet any of my clients or team members as we are located globally.

As we all know many things changed post covid and one such thing is daycare. I have 2 young kids and I'm unable to leave them in daycare as there are no daycares functioning all day cause I still they dont hv enough kids to run it full time. Also my younger kid catches viral frequently. I have explained this and sent a mail to my staffing hr asking for WFH approval.

She has asked for my tentative date of return to the office. But I really need a long duration as i dont wanna risk by leaving my small kids in daycare with no proper routine for them. So now what should I reply to my company about the tentative date? How many months I can ask for WFH for these reasons?
Kindly advise.
Thanks

Dear Maya,

Whenever a company's administration takes a policy decision, they take it in the interest of the company. For a particular employee, the decision may not be suitable. Nevertheless, the administration takes a decision in the larger interest of the company.

India witnessed a third wave of COVID-19 in the month of January. Though the wave ebbed sooner, the companies allowed the WFH facility. Now if they wish to have a hybrid model, there has to be a solid reason behind it.

Why are you unable to attend the office in person? What arrangement is there to look after your children while working from home, can it not be continued while working from the office?

You may put up an application for continuing with the WFH facility citing family reasons. However, the administration may give a concession for a limited period. What when that period expires? How long would you like to ask for the extension for the WFH facility?

While asking for a concession, there has to be a concrete reason. Otherwise, your application could get turned down. Therefore, I recommend you find out a permanent solution to this challenge. Employees are expected to adapt to the policies of the company.

In view of this, I recommend taking a second look at your requirement.

Thanks,

The only person who can answer that question is your company. What does their WFH policy say?

We don't work for your company, so are unable to answer this question. This is something that you will have to negotiate with your boss. I suspect you will need a very strong argument to continue WFH, so make sure you develop a watertight case backed up with sufficient evidence.
