Hi, Need help. I am working with one of the Real estate company of 50-60 people where we don't have work from home culture as we don't work on tools or software. Due to Corona safety purposes, employees who is sick are not permitted to come hence they are working at home by doing the follow-ups for pending activities. But with time staff are taking a lot of work from home & resulting in non-deduction of their salary against absence (staff is not taking any leaves too)
My query is: can we make a system or worksheet on WFH day where we actually know that particular staff has worked & given his time for the day, will be verified by the manager so that salary paydays will be justifiable.
Can somebody share if they are facing the same where work from home culture is not available?

Dear Sonia,

Overall the focus of your query is on the WFH culture. The second issue is how a manager should monitor the work done by his/her subordinates.

The best way to monitor the work is to identify the ratios and costs associated with each department. Once you are clear about the end-result then the measurement becomes much easier. Whether by working from home or from office, the deliverables do not change. Therefore, please concentrate on the deliverables.

In your post, you have not mentioned the departments and the type of work the people from those departments. If you had mentioned it, it would have become possible to give some suggestions.

Your query is "can we make a system or worksheet on WFH day where we actually know that particular staff has worked & given his time for the day, will be verified by the manager so that salary paydays will be justifiable"

From your query one feels that you wish to have close supervision. However, managers are responsible for the deliverables of the department and they are not employed to keep a close watch on their staff.

Therefore, shift your focus from people to business and you will get a solution automatically.

Thanks,

Dinesh Divekar
