Hi Seniors,
I am working in a pvt company. Many years i am used to the popular national holidays. But recently we all understood by an rti, there are no such records or GOs declaring republic, independence and Gandi days as holidays.
But somewhere i read that pvt companies should provide 7 hoidays per year ( 3 national and 4 festival).
Pls clarify, is it a crime working on these three (so called national holiday) days.
Can we declare 7 festival holidays specific to our state.
Please help.

Dear Madhusudan,
It is surprising that you ask a question whether it is a crime to work on 15 Aug, 26 Jan and 2 Oct. I would have thought that national spirit would make you see the need to have a holiday on these days. Does it mean that only if the law was to punish you, you will give holidays for these 3 days ? In effect, you are strengthening the general feeling among many that, Indians only do things, if the opposite is punishable by law.

Well, assuming 365 days and 52 Sundays, total working days would be 313. Now, would working 313 days instead of 310 in a year make such a big difference? Apart from of course creating resentment and exposing the company to charges of not paying heed to days of national importance.
Most of the countries with bigger GDP than us observe more holidays - people spending more days in the office and longer hours does not automatically translate into more work.
My 2 cents, the energies spent in cutting out or shifting the 3 national holidays can we spent better in making the most of the remaining days workers come to work.
